UK experts to share low caron experience with Taiwan (29/09/2009)

Audiences at Low Carbon seminar

Over 200 people from government departments, academics and senior decision-makers from private sectors attended this seminar and exchanged their views with six UK speakers.

Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan, the British Trade and Cultural Office (BTCO) will hold 'Carbon confused? opportunities and challenges of moving to a low carbon economy' Seminar on 29 Sep. We expect 200 people from government departments, academics and senior decision-makers from private sectors to attend the seminar and exchange their views with six UK speakers.

MOEA Vice Minister Jung-Chiou Huang, EPA Deputy Minister Wen-Yan Chiau, and BTCO Director David Campbell will give opening remarks for the seminar. Bureau of Energy will give a presentation on Taiwan greenhouse gas mitigation policy & strategy of energy sector。Leading Taiwanese technology company AU Optronics Corporation will share their experience in managing carbon risk and taking it as opportunities.

The UK’s Climate Change Act 2008 makes the UK the first country in the world to have a legally binding long-term framework to cut greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. The UK Government also published Low Carbon Transition Plan, an economy-wide strategy, on July 15 this year to help convert the UK to low carbon living, and take advantage of the economic benefits.

To meet the targets, UK business also launched several low carbon initiatives. Tesco has committed to a ‘universally accepted and commonly understood measure of the carbon footprint of every product Tesco sells’. British Telecom began measuring its carbon footprint in the UK in 1996. So Far the company’s emissions in the UK are down 58%. BT is also investing wind power and adopting measures to increase energy efficiency.

  1. Legally binding targets: The UK passed a Climate Change Act in 2008 which sets binding national targets for the UK to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 and at least 20% by 2020, against a 1990 baseline.UK's mid-term target has now been revised to a 34% cut in emissions relative to 1990 levels.
